Maintaining Independence as You Get Older

Unfortunately, getting older is part of life; how you handle it dictates whether you will enjoy the process or not. However, getting older can be fun and enjoyable if you know where to look and what to do. Just because you hit a certain age does not mean that your life is over. Of course, you will need to make changes and adaptations along the way, but soon these will become your new normal, and before you know it, you will be embracing change with a smile.

Routines Are Important

No matter what your age, having a routine for your day is important. If your days lack structure and balance, then you can find yourself losing a sense of self and losing direction in the process. Your routine does not have to be rigid, and it certainly does not have to be fixed day in day out, but if you try and maintain a bit of structure to each day, you will soon not even notice the aging process. If you struggle to make and maintain routines, then try and get others involved to help you where possible.

You Must Take Care of Yourself

It can be easy to let things slip, and this is why it is important to always take care of yourself; from having a daily wash to undertaking Activities of Daily Living (ADL), it is important that you put yourself and your priorities first. Taking care of yourself may sound selfish, but if you neglect yourself, then your mental health and wellbeing will take a back seat too. When you are not as mentally strong and well as you should be, you risk exposing yourself to depression.

Meet New People

Getting to know new people and meeting new people is good at any time of your life, and when you meet up for a coffee or go out for a spot of lunch, you are maintaining your independence without even realizing it. Small things matter and they count too, so do not underestimate the value of having a chat with somebody new over a cup of coffee.

Challenge Yourself

Do not focus on what you can no longer do; instead, focus on what you want to do and what you want to achieve. Challenging yourself gives you direction and focus, and this is what you need to get out of bed every morning, even when it is a bit of a struggle. When you challenge yourself, you are telling yourself that you are not settling for less than the best. Physical and mental challenges are good for keeping your brain active and motivated. If you do not move your body even for a few minutes a day, then you will become idle and additional problems may start to set in.

To maintain your independence, you need to stay as fit and healthy as possible, and this means eating well and exercising a few times a week. When you look after your body, it will take care of you.
