Drug and alcohol abuse can damage the body in various ways, which can severely affect the user’s health when abused consistently over a prolonged time period (as seen in cases of addiction/dependency). But there are also general health recommendations that can help treat those physical symptoms while the individual undergoes drug and alcohol addiction treatment in a rehab center. The following are some of the negative health consequences of drug and alcohol abuse/addiction, as well as health recommendations to treat those particular symptoms or ailments:

Pancreas

It may swell due to constant irritation, leading to a block of enzyme flow into the stomach; this results in diabetes and problems with digestion. Requires nutrient-rich foods and small frequent meals

Kidneys

It may become inflamed and result in infection due to significant nutrient loss. It requires nutrient-rich foods with high potassium.

Liver

It is lowered in vitamin and mineral storage due to heavy drug/alcohol use; swelling of the liver eventually prevents bile production (bile is needed for fat absorption and digestion). It requires high-calorie and nutrient-dense foods with rich protein.

Skin and Hair

As drug and alcohol use depletes nutrients in the body, the normal condition of hair and skin also depletes. It needs nutrient-dense foods with Vitamin A, C, and high protein

Mucous Membrane

It may become irritated and lead to sedation of the membrane, resulting in problems with the esophagus, stomach, and rectum. It needs high vitamin A such as orange vegetables and Vitamin C with limited caffeine intake.

Stomach

It becomes irritated, which later results in a higher risk of ulcers. It requires small frequent meals such as snacks with very limited caffeine.

Intestines

It faces a higher risk of poor absorption levels and cancer due to heavy drug/alcohol use. It needs high fiber intake, water, and regular exercise.

Rectum

Daily drug/alcohol use can lead to diarrhea, resulting in painful hemorrhoids. It requires fibrous foods, rutin minerals, water, and exercise.

Central Nervous System

It becomes irritated, leading to sedation and aggravation of the nervous system. This results in poor memory and brain performance, as well as stopping dead brain cells from regenerating. It needs a lot of rest and nutrient-rich foods.

The problem is that people will justify their behavior and think moderate drinking is alright. If moderation is the key to drinking, then, of course, they have a license to drink. And once alcohol is in the system, judgment is altered. If a little bit of liquor makes one feel good, then a little bit more couldn’t hurt, right?  It’s all in the justification. And the more one drinks, the easier it is to come up with more justifiers. If one doesn’t have a problem with alcohol, then the phrase “moderation is the key” would be a moot point. You would be preaching to the choir. So let’s face facts.  If you tend to overdo it more often than you would like to admit, then perhaps you need some help. Asking for help is not the same as admitting to weakness; in fact, it is pretty brave to think you could have a better life than living the way you are now.
