By definition, an air compressor is a device that converts electrical energy into energy stored in the form of pressurized air. The increased pressure is achieved by decreasing the volume of the gas (air) fed into the compressor. There are many uses for an air compressor, some of which we will cover in this article.

Inflating Tires

If you’ve ever had a flat tire, then you’ve probably needed to take your tyres to the shop in order to inflate them. That is, unless you have a  portable tire inflator. An air compressor tire inflator attachment is able to do the same job using the pressurized air in the air compressor. If your air compressor is small enough, it can function as a portable tire inflator, so long as you can find a source of electricity to run it.

Pneumatic Tools

Many workshops have tools that run on air, not electricity. The advantages of using this type of tool include that they are lighter, the individual tools are cheaper, and that there is no risk of electric shock if the tool comes in contact with water. Nonetheless, there is a vast array of tools that can be attached to an air compressor. Examples include grinders, nail guns, drills, sanders, wrenches, and many more.

Filling Cylinders

Ever wondered how a gas cylinder (such as the one used for scuba diving) is filled? Air compressors can work with any type of gas, so they can fill a cylinder with oxygen for scuba diving, or butane or cooking. All you need is the proper nozzle attachment. Additionally, air compressors are used to clean out cylinders in between uses when it is required – this is important in scuba diving because the cylinder must be clean before it is filled with oxygen.

Spray Painting

No, we don’t use the cans of spray paint that graffiti artists usually use. Although the concept is basically the same because the cans contain compressed air. An air compressor can be attached to a special paint canister called an airbrush for spray painting vehicles. Professional cosmetologists use a smaller version for spraying on tans and make up.

Pressure Cleaning

You’re probably familiar with those satisfying videos online of carpets, couches, cars, and even pavements being washed using highly pressurized water. Essentially, the device is a modification of an air compressor that is able to pump out high pressure water through the cleaning nozzle.

Summary

There are many more uses for air compressors in a variety of industries. Some larger industrial machines also contain an air compressor unit. Even car engines have a compressor unit within them. But when it comes to a standalone air compressor, the aforementioned uses are the most common. Many people with home workshops opt to get an air compressor because it is safer than using power tools and because they can get a lot of use out of this versatile device. Consider getting an air compressor if you like DIY projects. The device itself may be slightly pricey, but the different tools and nozzles are usually cheap to add. It is a worthy investment for many people.
