Whether professional house painters in Melbourne painting a garage door, your office hallway or a brand-new wall in your living room, you want the end result to be a great one. If a painting project is not done right, it can cost you a lot of time and money in the long run. You’ll have to spend more time trying to fix it if anything goes wrong and you’ll also have to deal with the frustration that comes with a botched job.

The good news is that there are some things that you can do to make sure that your next painting project doesn’t turn into a disaster. All it takes is knowing what these tips are and using them when needed. The process of painting a room can be overwhelming for some. There are many paint colors to choose from and you have to decide which type of paint is right for your situation. You have to figure out if you need primer, how much paint you will need, what type of brush or roller to use and the list goes on.

1.   Protect your flooring

Painting is messy. If you have carpeted floors, you may want to cover them with a canvas drop cloth. You can also use large plastic tarps but they tend to slide around while you are working and if they get wet, they can get very heavy. For laminate or hardwood flooring, use adhesive-backed paper to protect the floor. It is important to protect your floors, especially when using oil-based paints, because it can be difficult to clean up any spills after the paint has dried.

2.   Don’t Rush It

A lot of people have the mentality of wanting to get the job done as quickly as possible so they can move on to other things. This often leads to rushed work. They don’t take the time to do things properly and will often rush through certain steps of the process so they can get it over with sooner rather than later. This may seem like a good idea at first but it actually leads to an inferior end result.

3.   Stir paint thoroughly before painting

This is especially important for paint that has been stored for an extended period of time, as pigment and the extender may have settled to the bottom. Stir with a stick or a flexible paddle and don’t stop until there are no traces of separation and you can see the texture of the bottom of the can in the paint.

4.   Use only clean tools when painting

Any paint solids left on your tools from previous jobs could contaminate new paint, ruin your finish and potentially damage your equipment. Soap and water will take care of most tools, but for dried latex or oil-based paints, use mineral spirits to clean brushes or rollers; denatured alcohol or lacquer thinner for spray equipment; or an automotive-type grease remover for other types of stains.

5.   Now it is time to start painting

Make sure you are using good quality brushes and rollers, as this will make a difference in how your paint job looks once it is completed. Remember to always tap off the excess paint before starting to apply it on the wall, this will help prevent dripping and splattering, which can ruin your hard work.

If you are painting an accent wall or if there is a specific design that needs to be painted then you may want to invest in painter’s tape and create a border with it before applying the paint. This will ensure that your lines are nice and straight and that any extra paint does not bleed onto other areas of your wall or ceiling.

The last step is once your paint has been applied and dried, then remove the painter’s tape from around your window or door.
